Seven recurring enterprise IT challenges and smart ways to solve them

GovernmentPrivate sectorBanks & finance

Whether you run a ministry, a manufacturing group or a bank, the same technical problems appear again and again. They are rarely caused by a lack of tools. They are usually caused by missing ownership, missing data and too much manual work. The good news is that each has a practical, proven remedy, and most can be tackled without a large budget.

Visibility problems: what do we actually own?

  • Shadow IT. Departments adopt cloud services and applications without IT or security review, creating unmanaged data flows. Remedy: offer a fast approval path, discover usage through DNS, proxy and cloud access logs, and publish an approved catalogue so that the official route is also the easy one.
  • Poor asset inventory. You cannot patch, monitor or retire what you do not know exists. Remedy: build a configuration management database (CMDB) fed automatically by network discovery, endpoint agents and cloud APIs, with a named owner for every asset. CIS Controls place inventory of enterprise assets and software first for exactly this reason.
  • Identity sprawl. Former staff accounts, shared logins, service accounts with no owner and excessive administrator rights. Remedy: central identity, single sign-on, multi-factor authentication, periodic access reviews and a privileged access management solution for administrative accounts.

Hygiene problems: known weaknesses that linger

  • Patch backlog. Teams are overwhelmed by volume. Remedy: prioritise by exposure and known exploitation rather than by score alone, define patch windows by asset criticality, automate deployment for standard endpoints and servers, and track overdue items as a management metric.
  • Backups that are never tested. A backup that has not been restored is only a hope. Remedy: schedule restore tests, measure actual recovery time against the recovery objective, keep at least one copy offline or immutable, and align the programme with ISO 22301.

Operational problems: people and noise

  • Alert fatigue. Analysts receive thousands of low-value notifications and begin to ignore them. Remedy: tune detections regularly, correlate related alerts into single incidents, suppress known-benign patterns, and use AIOps or machine-assisted triage to group and rank events. Keep a human accountable for the final decision.
  • Skills gap. Good engineers are scarce and expensive, especially in security and cloud. Remedy: automate repetitive tasks with scripts, runbooks and workflow tools; invest in structured training; and complement the in-house team with a trusted managed service for specialised functions.

Turning fixes into a system

Solving each problem once is not enough; they return unless the process is managed. A few principles help:

  1. Give every problem an owner and a simple measure, such as percentage of assets with a known owner or number of restore tests completed this quarter.
  2. Connect the CMDB to incident, change and problem management so that every ticket carries context about the asset and its dependencies.
  3. Automate the repeatable: account provisioning and removal, patch deployment, evidence collection for audits and ticket routing.
  4. Review results monthly with management, and retire measures that no longer drive decisions.

ITIL practices and ISO/IEC 27001 controls provide a common language for this, and government, private and banking organisations can all adopt them at a scale that matches their size.

How Wethaq ICT helps

Wethaq ICT helps organisations replace firefighting with managed operations. We review the seven areas above, agree priorities with your team, and then implement the tooling and processes behind them: discovery and CMDB, patch and identity governance, backup validation, monitoring with alert tuning, and service management. You keep ownership of your environment, while our engineers fill skill gaps and keep the improvements running.
